Watercolor Journaling by Oh Be Joyful

I am about to go out for a walk with Joe. We plan on stopping at the local coffee shop, and on a bleak, cold day like this one, it will be welcome to sit having a cup of latte.

I have been working on my watercolour journal. I am doing some Native Amercian watercolours and writing about my experiences teaching in Arizona. I don't know if I mentioned it, but I took a year's hiatus and went to Arizona to teach English on the Navajo Reservation. It was one of my most memorable experiences, and Monument Valley was amazingly beautiful. I was not very happy back then. I was in a very bad marriage, and so the experience was marred a bit because of that. The Indians accepted me rather quickly...I think one reason was that I told them that my parents were holocaust survivors, and the other reason was that I had read a lot about the Indians, knew a lot of their cultures and traditions, and made a point of being very knowledgeable of their ways of life before I went there, and that was appreciated. I did learn a lot though. I was given the name "Oh Be Joyful", and that is because they wanted to see me happy, and I wasn't. I was happy teaching the Indian children, and I fell in love with Arizona, but I guess that there was always a sad look in my eyes, at least that is what they said, even though I always had a smile for each and every one of them.
On the day, that I left, I went to say goodbye to the chief....He took my hand and thanked me, and the look in his eyes, I will never forget. He said to me , " Be happy one day, Oh Be Joyful."
I wish that I could go back, so they could see the happiness in my eyes. Also, Joe would love the spiritual beauty of Arizona. Though it is very different from Donegal County, both have that special magic about them.

I will be making a few Native American watercolour paintings for my art journal. It was nice thinking back on my experiences and some of the things that I learned there.

I love your American Indian name. What I really love is that it became a fulfilled prophecy in your life.

I wish I knew a lot more about my Native American heritage. Sadly the stories and traditions were not handed down. I suspect that was so they could fit in culturally. After all those who stuck to the old ways were sent to the reservations.

A lovely page Micki. They would be so pleased that your Indian name is now fulfilled.

Micki, with my own bit of Native American heritage and interest in relating to the culture (which I've enjoyed doing through my dolls), you know I'll be watching for your paintings. I'm a little behind on my dolls, still working on November's full moon, but will have the entire year's series done soon. It will be so fulfilling for you to create the watercolors, and I know they will be extremely meaningful. I can't wait!

What a way to document you experience. I wish I had the talent that you do with those water colors.

Sometimes in life the bitter makes us appreciate the sweet when we find it....

It is a shame that you cannot go back and show them how filled with joy your life has become. Monument Valley is a stunning place and it must have been an amazing experience to teach the children. A friend of mine went there and worked as a midwife among the Navajo for several years. She loved it too.

Wow Micki, I spent two summers over on their Res helping to build a new school for the kids so they didn't have to be bused to Flagstaff. That was 1975 & 1976. It was a great experience that I will never forget. I am also part Indian-Cherokee, and Irish. Great combo, hun!! I embrace both of my heritage with wide open arms!! Hugs to you and Joe!!

Your right AZ does have some beautiful places. My all time favorite place here is Sedona it reminds me of a time when I was safe. I hope next year to do more camping there.

Micki,
You know that I work in a school that offers Cree as a second language. It is a wonderful place to work. The culture is rich with stories and traditions. My great grandmother worked on a reservation in South Dakota at the beginning of the 20th century. Funny how life goes in circles...
I love the designs and patterns of native culture.
The elder would be very happy to know that you had found the path be lighting the light in your eyes and warming your soul. Being joyful is indeed a great way to live.
Wishing you a very Happy New Year.
Warmest regards,
Anna
